It’s close of business, yes 2am Saturday morning. Sales was pretty good yesterday, we had to hire chairs for customers to sit down. The time I dread the most has finally come, reconciling sales! From the waiters, to the bar man, it does not get easier. Sometimes I stay up till 7am reconciling sales records alone! It’s worse when there are shortages, some waiters have more shortages than their salaries at the end of the month! Do you know some waiters deliberately have shortages? They “borrow” money from the restaurant and “payback” at the end of the month. How long can I continue like this? The business is good but the leakages are too much!
Does this sound like you or someone you know? I read an article recently by the CEO of Mercedes Benz, and what I got out of it is that, “any business that is not taking advantage of mobile applications will become extinct in the near future”. What this means is that, there are simpler and more efficient was of managing one’s business. Some people cannot imagine going to a local bar in Ejigbo area of Lagos, and see waiters using their mobile devices to take customer orders. “Nigeria never reach that level”, I hear someone say. But why say so? There are over 52 million active internet users in Nigeria, 80% of them use smartphones. So why is this had to believe? One of these days, ask 5 street hawkers if they have Facebook accounts and ask to see their mobile phones. At least 2 of them will have smartphones.
You can use a mobile point of sale application to take customer orders, replacing the traditional paper dockets. All that information is stored in the mobile device and a server in which the employer can access remotely. At the close of business all the waiter needs to do is send an email to the employer which will show a breakdown of what was sold. Trust me it is that simple!
I hear you thinking about the cost implication.. If you lose N4,000 daily to leakages or theft and you open your restaurant 6 days a week, 50 weeks a year. It means you lose an average of N1,200,000 yearly. That amount can be saved for a new 21kva generator or for a 10kva solar inverter. A mobile point of sale application will not cost you up to N500,000, especially for small restaurants that have only one service point and up to 6 waiters.
Hope I got you thinking..
